Although I no longer have a pet of my own, I am fascinated and charmed by the pets of my family and friends and found myself thinking of them and their lives – en espanol. The Spanish word for pet is mascota and in English, a mascot is, according to Merriam-Webster, “any human, animal, or object thought to bring luck.” Meet my mascotas – thanks to their help I have achieved a continuous streak of more than 2,110 days on Duolingo.
As I visit and interact with las mascotas, I imagine their thoughts and adventures. It all provides great entertainment and practice con mi estudia de espanol. You are about to meet unas mascotas maravillosas:
- El Cohete (Rocket) — A family member’s pet, adopted from a rescue shelter. His soulful expressions and his misadventures demand to be shared. The person who rescued him used to play the song Vincent and the song seemed to soothe him. And just as the life of Vincent Van Gogh was filled with drama and angst and an injured ear, so is his – at least that’s the way he sees it. His name is Rocket, se llama El Cohete, (the Rocket).
- Los Gatos Felicity y Max — Felicity was our last pet and Max vive en mi barrio – lives in my neighborhood. He also has an interesting origin story of being adopted twice and his role is to survey the neighborhood, find and attack ‘things’, and interpret the moods of his people.
- El Noble Nolan, Cali de Nueva York, y Carlito — There are also stories of weekend getaways with that party animal Nolan, the stylish lifestyle of Cali en la ciudad de Nueva York, and the travels and good fortunes of Charlie after finding his permanent home.
- Y mas.
