We love to travel and it was not until our later years that we were able to travel beyond North America.
Living in the northeast and later in the southwest, we easily visited Montreal, Canada, and the cities of Tijuana and Ensenada in Mexico, and the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean – that is where we were enticed into buying a timeshare. That was the extent of our travel but the dream of visiting far-off destinations remained.
It was after a short work-related opportunity to travel to London, England that we finally ventured out on our own. After all, we now had US Passports. We took a leap and traded two time-share weeks to explore Spain’s Costa del Sol and the Algarve in Portugal. We rented a car and lived in each location for a week, driving the narrow streets, shopping for groceries, and exploring surrounding towns, even stopping at Gibraltar before taking a ferry to Tangier, Morocco. It was exciting to realize that we had visited two continents!
For later trips we did not always use traded weeks but found our own accommodations. There was travel deeper into Mexico, a solo bike tour for me in British Columbia, Canada, and travel together to Rome, Italy, and beyond. We enjoy travel in so many ways. Whenever we discussed future travel, one site fascinated us – we felt that we must visit Egypt. Images of bustling Cairo with its busy markets as seen in old movies, the vast desert, and of course the pyramids, all lured us.
At this time in our lives – at last – we had the time and the resources to make such a trip. So, with that as our goal we set out to travel to Egypt.
Ten years later, although we’ve traveled to many places in the world, Egypt is not one of them. On one trip as we sailed along the Red Sea to the Suez Canal we looked across to the Egyptian coast, but we did not stop there.
