His name is really Rocket

Cohete is a family pet who lives in Houston and this is his story.

In early 2025 he was adopted from the Texas countryside where he had been living wild and alone. His intuition led him to find his hero, Yvonne. He took shelter at her home and she worked with local organizations that find homes for unwanted, displaced, or abandoned Jack Russell Terriers. Organizations, like Russell Rescue Inc., helped to publicize his plight on the web by posting his picture online.

His life before being rescued is a mystery, and he seems to carry the trauma of those early experiences. This may explain why he sees everything from that tortured lens. He describes all that happens in rudimentary Spanish and this is why his name, Rocket, is translated as Cohete.

His loving family consists of El niño, la mamá y el padre. It is El niño who tells of the adoption.

“WELL, MY MOM AND DAD SAID WE COULD GET A DOG OF OUR OWN SINCE I GOT A GOOD REPORT CARD. I WAS SO EXCITED! I THOUGHT WE WOULD JUST GO TO A PET STORE BUT INSTEAD WE DROVE A LONG TIME OUT INTO THE COUNTRY, AWAY FROM THE CITY. MY MOM EMAILED A LADY SHE FOUND ON A WEBSITE. SHE HAD RESCUED HIM AFTER HIS FAMILY ABANDONED HIM ON THE ROADSIDE. THE LADY SAID THAT HE RAN SO FAST, HE WAS LIKE A ROCKET TAKING OFF! AND SO HIS NAME CAME WITH HIM.

I STILL REMEMBER HOW HE WAS WHEN WE MET HIM AND BROUGHT HIM HOME.THE ONLY PERSON HE SEEMED TO TRUST WAS MY MOM. HE DIDN’T EVEN SEEM TO LIKE ME!”

They were a happy family – until shortly after Cohete was adopted. The family left for an overnight visit to Galveston and boarded him near their home. Desafortunadamente, according to Rocket, this is what happened. If you speak – or are learning – Spanish, you will understand his version of the adventure. If you do not, the English translation follows.

¡Ay!  ¡Mi oreja! ¡El perro loco me mordió la oreja! Tenía mucho miedo, pero seguí luchando. Algunas personas me ayudaron.

My name is Rocket and I’m a brave dog. But, last night there was a terrifying incident. Something dreadful happened.

My family – the boy, the Mommy, and the dad, they left me in a box in a kennel? A kennel? What is that? And, why me? I don’t know.

It makes my heart hurt.

In the kennel I try to rest and to think about my family. Suddenly a very big fierce dog attacked me!

What to do? I fight a lot, a lot but the crazy guy was bigger and he keeps attacking me!

Alas! My ear! The crazy dog bit my ear! I was very scared but kept fighting. Some people helped me.

My heart is broken, again.

Later, the Mommy came for me. She took me home after the terrible incident.

This is a photo of me in Mommy’s car after the incident. You can see how shocked I was. After emergency treatment I had to wear a green bandage on my head like a holiday decoration, but I am too sad to care.

And so, it was a bad incident, but now I know that my family loves me and cares for me. I love my family so much and, more importantly, my family loves me.

And, I am The Rocket, a very brave dog!

And now my heart is whole again.
